John Muir completed his 1000 mile walk from Indiana and arrived in Cedar Key in October 1867. While recovering from a bout with malaria in Cedar Key, Muir first expressed his belief that "Nature is valuable for its own sake, not only because it is useful for man". This principle guided Muir throughout his life.

The USDA has named Cedar Key, The State of Florida´s Rural Community of the Year for 2010!  Contratulations to all who made this honor possible.  

Florida Monthly Magazine votes Cedar Key, FL a Best Week End Get Away.  Cedar Key took an honorable mention for Best Sunsets!  Cedar Key is the best birding hot spot on the north central coast of Florida!
